1/10 – 1/22/2015 – We continue to be
amazed at the sights in Arizona. We have
enjoyed hiking, golfing (well I have), gambling, eating and touring the area
and have some great pictures to share.
We took the amazing ride from Apache Junction to Roosevelt Dam at the
end of Apache Trail by way of Globe AZ since we didn’t feel like taking the
shortcut which includes 22 miles of rutted dirt road. Route
60 through Top of the World, Superior, Miami and Globe was a series of rolling
switchbacks through mountains and valley’s with tunnels and hairpin turns, not
to mention amazing rock formations.
But the most beautiful part of the journey was the Tonto National
Monument and the view of Roosevelt Lake, Dam and Bridge. Tonto National Monument showcases two
Salado-style cliff dwellings. Colorful pottery, woven cotton cloth, and other
artifacts tell a story of people living and using resources from the northern
Sonoran Desert from 1250 to 1450.

We also attended Apache Heritage days which demonstrated the
history, cultures and myths of the Superstition Mountains. Highlights included the Apache Yellow Bird
Indian Dancers, awarding-winning superstars of Native American dance, a number
of Native American artists and craftsmen and Western vendors displaying some
amazing turquoise jewelry and art.
We have also begun doing some hiking keeping a sharp eye out
for rattlesnakes.
