Vistas in High Places

1/10 – 1/22/2015  – We continue to be amazed at the sights in Arizona.  We have enjoyed hiking, golfing (well I have), gambling, eating and touring the area and have some great pictures to share.  We took the amazing ride from Apache Junction to Roosevelt Dam at the end of Apache Trail by way of Globe AZ since we didn’t feel like taking the shortcut which includes 22 miles of rutted dirt road.   Route 60 through Top of the World, Superior, Miami and Globe was a series of rolling switchbacks through mountains and valley’s with tunnels and hairpin turns, not to mention amazing rock formations.

But the most beautiful part of the journey was the Tonto National Monument and the view of Roosevelt Lake, Dam and Bridge.  Tonto National Monument showcases two Salado-style cliff dwellings. Colorful pottery, woven cotton cloth, and other artifacts tell a story of people living and using resources from the northern Sonoran Desert from 1250 to 1450.

We also attended Apache Heritage days which demonstrated the history, cultures and myths of the Superstition Mountains.  Highlights included the Apache Yellow Bird Indian Dancers, awarding-winning superstars of Native American dance, a number of Native American artists and craftsmen and Western vendors displaying some amazing turquoise jewelry and art.

We have also begun doing some hiking keeping a sharp eye out for rattlesnakes.

Jamming in the Junction

1/2 - 1/9/2015 – Apache Junction, AZ – Today we were entertained by a group of very talented musicians who hold a Jam Session every Friday at our resort.  The players may have been long in the tooth but they were also long on talent as they rocked the house with country western tunes for 2 hours.  This really was a great finish to our first week in Superstition Lookout RV Resort in the shadows of Superstition Mountains, our new back yard.  Earlier in the week we toured the Apache Trail, Arizona’s oldest highway.  The Apaches and Yavapais used the trail for their predatory raids against the Pimas along the Salt and Gila Rivers south and west of Superstition Mountain. The Apaches and Yavapais continued their raids after the arrival of the Anglo-Americans in early 1850’s. Finally in 1864, Camp McDowell was established along the Verde River some four miles north of the Salt River. The Pimas became willing allies of the blue-shirted soldiers who manned Fort McDowell. This footpath (trail) along the Salt River through the mountains to Tonto Basin was called both the Tonto Trail and the Yavapai Trail. The Army quelled the Apaches-Yavapais in the region by 1868. There were other military campaigns fought against renegade Apaches from 1871 until Geronimo surrendered in 1886 at Skeleton Canyon in Southern Arizona. The Apache Trail, as we know it today, originates in Apache Junction and terminates at the junction with Highway 60-70 some four miles east of Miami, Arizona. The original roadway began at the Mesa railhead and terminated at the Roosevelt Dam site on Salt River some sixty-two miles away.  Along the way we visited Goldfield Ghost Town, Lost Dutchman State Park, Canyon Lake and the infamous Tortilla Flats.  Oh yeah, I also managed to fit in a couple rounds of golf this week.  Many more adventures to follow as we will be here for three months.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

1/1/2015 – HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! We hope that all of our family and friends have a very prosperous and fulfilling year in 2015.  After spending a very enjoyable month in Tucson AZ we have arrived in Apache Junction AZ, which will be our home for the next three months.  At first look we are very pleased with Superstition Lookout RV Resort where we will stay until April 1st as we have an amazing view from our porch of the Superstition Mountains which are currently covered with snow.  We will miss the really wonderful people at Mission View RV Resort in Tucson and take with us so many fond memories of the weekly BBQ’s,  ice cream socials and bingo, Karaoke night were of course I performed magnificently, Christmas dinner and the icing on the cake was a rocking New Years Eve party on our last night.  The experiences really helped fill the void of our first holiday away from family and we are very thankful to all the wonderful friends we made.  We did feel very much at home on New Year’s Eve as we left the party after midnight to the frigid night air and the snow falling from the sky.  Yes, I did say snow as in the white stuff that almost never falls in southern Arizona.  Seems like this December has set records for rain and cold in southern Arizona  and Chippy reminds me daily that I did promised to take her where it is warm, as she bundles up each morning to walk the dogs…..LOL….stay tuned for our continuing adventures in sunny Arizona.  Love and best wishes to all….
